A modern take on a retro-vintage style

Pandora Yearbook is a student led organization at the University of Georgia in Athens, GA culminating all aspects of campus life in an annual publication.

The Goal

A second year as art director with a new theme. This year was about capturing a modern-retro vibe and applying it throughout the design layout of the book.

A year long process that was about expanding upon the skills learned the previous year, building an even greater book, bringing even more community, and most importantly having fun through out the design process.

The Constraints

With this yearbook, the process was smoother because I understood all of the aspects of the book that needed to be considered and executed.

Since this is the official yearbook of the University, the content and design had to run through a chain of command in order to be approved. Because of that, the University was essentially our client.

The ongoing global pandemic also added some extra difficulty and the organization had to readjust and figure out how to continue to communicate and finish the book while social distancing.

"...inspired by retro design elements but still keeping it modern to signify this idea of looking back at the past but still continuing to move forward."

The Solution

With the theme of the book being 2020 In Retrospect, I wanted to be inspired by retro design elements but still keeping it modern to signify this idea of looking back at the past but still continuing to move forward.

This book is about celebrating the past, connecting it to the present, and showing how far the University has come since becoming the first state-chartered public university in the United States. It is the idea that the identity of the book is built around and finding unique ways to visualize that theme throughout the book.

I was inspired by retro diner signage, typographic treatments, neonlights, gritty textures, photo paneling, photo filters, and collaging. Those elements became the visual interpretation of the theme.
